Carlton Hotel Singapore (Part 1)

Some time around the Holiday Season last year, I took my daughter Arra to a weekend staycation in Singapore. It was Arra’s second time to travel to Singapore but she has no memory of the first time because she was barely a year old when that happened.

My main objective, quite honestly, was to take Arra to Universal Studios as a post-birthday treat to her. Big Daddy and I have talked about the idea many times in the past and I was so thrilled that we were finally able to do it for Arra. She has proven herself many times to be such a reliable, helpful and responsible daughter and she definitely deserved the treat! Unfortunately, we traveled without Big Daddy, who had to stay behind in Phuket to work and to continue on his Detox Program.

The Lion City

Known all over the world as the ‘world’s greatest city’, the ‘easiest place for business,’ the ‘most livable city in Asia’ and the ‘best city in the world to live in for Asia expatriates’, I personally recommend Singapore to anyone who might be having some difficulty choosing a travel destination within Asia. One friend who couldn’t make up her mind between traveling to Hong Kong and traveling to Singapore for her annual vacation leave asked me which one I would choose. I told her, “Hands down, Singapore”.

Singapore may be a small country but it is extremely gorgeous! The surroundings are so clean, streets are never traffic jammed and people are generally more friendly, accommodating, hardworking and disciplined than any other Asian country I’ve (so far) been to.

And now that Philippines and Singapore signed a new agreement on air services, there really is no reason not to book a flight to The Lion City the next time the opportunity comes!

The Carlton Hotel Singapore

With a total land area of only 716.1 km2, it’s amazing to know that there are over 200 hotels in Singapore – 60 of which are first class (four-star) hotels, and 30 are luxury (five-star) hotels! So we knew that finding the perfect hotel that met our budget for our weekend getaway was going to be challenging.

Luckily, we found a great deal over at Agoda for a hotel that was just 15-20 minutes drive from the airport and about the same distance from Universal Studios, that also included a complimentary breakfast for two.

When considering a hotel that I’m totally unfamiliar with, photos and online reviews are what I resort to for help in making a wise choice. After seeing the photos of the rooms and other facilities, and after reading the (mixed) reviews on TripAdvisor, I was convinced that this hotel was worth a try. So we booked our stay at the Carlton Hotel Singapore.

Whatever the Carlton Hotel Singapore lacked in amenities and services (both quality and range) that caused it to never quite reach a five-star level (it is a four-star hotel which many people consider as primarily a business hotel), this hotel certainly made up for in terms of location. Strategically located at the heart of Singapore, this hotel is also only minutes away from Singapore’s busiest financial and convention centers such as Raffles Place and Suntec City International Convention & Exhibition Centre.

The hotel doorman was very friendly, he waved eagerly at us as soon as he saw our taxi pulling into the hotel driveway… and Arra, of course, waved back as excitedly (LOL)! I even asked Arra, “Baby, magkakilala kayo?”

Now, THAT is the kind of welcome we’d all love to receive, right?

The lobby wasn’t so grandiose but it looked decent and festive.

Except for one lady we encountered during our check-in who had a very thick Chinese accent, the people at the Front Desk were fairly easy to communicate with. Although none of them exhibited any exceptionally impressive customer service skills, they effectively conducted themselves in a professional manner .

Here’s Arra flashing her sweet smile upon our check-in.

There was this elevated lounge right next to the Front Desk that had plush-looking upholstered seats and a television. I wasn’t sure whether it was open to any guest of the hotel or only for a specific type of guest.

Right across from the Front Desk was this little tea lounge called Tuxedo that served tea, waffles and Express Set Lunch.

Directly facing the door to the Lobby was Cafe Mosaic, the hotel restaurant where guests can enjoy their complimentary breakfast.

On the way to the elevators, we passed by this quiet area…

…with this carved wooden bench positioned against a floor-to-ceiling window that overlooked the hotel driveway…

…and directly facing this other wall with a window.

Guests of Carlton Hotel Singapore can freely look through this window and into the pastry kitchen where the chefs whip up various delectable and colorful baked goods.

Further into the corner was this reception desk (of some sort). I had no idea what it was for since there was nobody manning this desk when I passed by it.

Right next to it was Carlton Hotel Singapore‘s cocktail lounge – Gravity Bar.

Now, this was probably my most favorite part of the lobby – the hotel’s collection of art glass!

This indoor wall fountain added a soothing touch to Carlton Hotel Singapore‘s welcoming ambiance.

This elegantly designed foyer – with bright contemporary wood finish on the floor and walls – leads to the hotel elevators that transport guests to their rooms.

Elevator Selfie shot with Arra Upshaw

Just before heading out into our room, Arra and I took our traditional “Elevator Selfie” shot (which we do every time we travel). It took us about an hour and a half to rest a bit and freshen up before we were ready to leave for Universal Studios!

Please stay tuned for Part 2 of my feature on Carlton Hotel Singapore where I will share more photos of our room and the pool area.

Bye for now, Guys!
