Weekend Reflections: Too Many Chiefs, Not Enough Indians

Have you ever found yourself in a situation in which you’re sitting in the back seat of a car, supposedly just a mere spectator to your husband teaching your teenager how to drive and you just couldn’t help but steal the show by giving (more like yelling out) your own instructions, too? For the ladies out there like me who also drive, you know exactly what I’m talking about; it’s just your driver’s instincts kicking in (yeah, right!). For those of you who do not drive, however, your instinct is simply born out of “your-life-flashing-before-your-eyes” fear.

The first time I gave in to this impulse, Big Daddy gently reminded me that he’s got everything under control. I quickly apologized, but then barely five minutes later, I was at it again.

Arra was attempting to make a three-point turn. As she was backing out from a narrow alley and onto a busy two-way street, I was overcome with “concern’ that she might not be able to see the cars coming from one side of the road. So just as she was inching her way out of the alley, and while Rick was quietly watching and letting her do her thing, I started taking on Big Daddy’s role as Le Instructeur, coaching Arra on what she was supposed to do. As if that wasn’t irritating enough, I also started responding to Arra’s questions as though I was Big Daddy’s official spokesperson.

That was when Rick called my attention and said, “My, please! Really, I got this. Okay? There’s too many chiefs but not enough Indians in the car here.”

I gave him my “Oops” smile and “my-lips-are-sealed” signal, leaned back against my seat and decided to just sit out the entire journey calmly, patiently and quietly. The whole time, I was praying to God for protection (LOL).

Our Poochie behind the wheel during our road trip to Ranong, Thailand; Big Daddy, right beside her.

To quote Jim Carrey in Bruce Almighty, “truly, I say unto you dudes”, there will always be moments like this when you find yourself faced with the temptation to try to take control of the reigns and steer a situation in the direction you think it should go. Making the choice to sit back and relax in the car took a great deal of trust and faith in my husband’s teaching skills and ability to take control in case something goes wrong (or even BEFORE something goes terribly wrong). Acknowledging that he was the driving instructor and not me also helped put me in my place – in a good way. There was a good reason why he was Le Instructeur, and not me. He is the better and more experienced driver. Therefore, he is the more qualified teacher. Heck, he was MY teacher to begin with!

It’s no different when it comes to our relationship with the Lord. Oftentimes, we try to take the steering wheel from God’s hands thinking that the situation will be resolved or will improve if we do things our way. When we do, we could not be more wrong! Every day, we should remind ourselves of who is really in control. It certainly isn’t you, and it isn’t me, either. We have to relinquish control to the One who knows better and who has the power to save us from ourselves when the situation becomes desperate, having faith that we are all under His watchful eye, and that “His ways and thoughts are always higher than our own” (Isaiah 55:9). If we don’t, then we’ll just be living our lives in constant fear of the unknown. Imagine how less stressful life can be if we simply “let go and let God”!

Just as the members of a tribe depend on their chief for wisdom, direction, and protection, it also takes trust, faith and an unfaltering recognition from us that God is the Chief, and we… we’re His beloved Indians. There simply can’t be too many Chiefs. :)
