The Secret To Eyeshadow Perfection

If you don’t want your eye makeup to look like a hot (smudged) mess by lunchtime then we’ve found the perfect solution to this annoying makeup mishap.

When it comes to under-rated beauty products lid primers are right up there. Most of us apply foundation all over our faces, including our eyelids, and wonder why our eye shadow creases. I know this because I was that person until I discovered Smashbox’s Photo Finish Lid Primer, $45. I remember scoffing at the pointlessness of such a silly-sounding product when I first discovered it a few years back.

Fortunately I didn’t let me cynicism stop me from giving it a go and I’ve been a big fan ever since. If you haven’t used a lid primer then get ready to join the beauty big league. These babies are total game-changers and well worth shelling out for. But if you’re thinking you’ll save your cash and use your favourite concealer instead – think again. Concealers are too creamy to keep your eye makeup in place. A good lid primer applies like a cream and dries to form a matte finish perfect for applying eye shadow. These powerful potions actually create a barrier between the oil on your lids and your eye shadow so that the colour stays right where you put it. Bare Minerals Prime Time Eyelid primer, $32 is another goodie but remember to give it a few minutes to set before applying your shadow.

Benefit’s Stay Don’t Stray, $49 goes one step further than your standard eyelid primer and can also be used under your eyes to prevent your under-eye concealer creasing. It comes in two shades to suit all skin tones and even looks great worn on its own for a flawless no-makeup look.

So if you’re after show-stopping peepers that will last the distance then a little pre-shadow priming is the key.
