Half Up – Boho Bun

We shared something similar to this at Pinners Conference this last weekend (read more about our Pinners class here), but this one is just a little bit more involved. That doesn’t mean it’s harder, it just means we added some extra flair to the style! There are countless ways to create buns using just braids, but this one is a little more than just braids! Watch our video to see what we do! Keep in mind, the more you pancake your braids, the messier and more carefree this style can become!

Step 1 – Part hair from ear to ear to create half pony

Step 2 – Divide that hair into a right & left section

Step 3 – Cross the right section over the left and create a half knot like tying your shoe

Step 4 – Repeat step 3 again, to make a full square knot

Step 5 – Pull on the ends of the knot to cinch it down

Try position the hair that the knot lays a bit flat on the head rather.

Step 6 – Secure the knot with a few bobby pins

Step 7 – Create a fishbone braid in each tail of the knot

You really can forgo this step if you’re in a hurry and just wrap the “tails” around the knot if you want. That’s actually how we did it at Pinner’s Conference. You could also add a rope braid/twist here or regular 3 strand braids too. If you stick with what we’ve done, and need a refresher on how to create a fishbone braid, you can watch our video HERE.

Step 8 – Pull on edges of braids to make them wider & messier. Secure ends with elastics.

Step 9 – Wrap braids as desired around the knot that is in the center

Step 10 – Secure braids with bobby pins as needed

Step 11 – (optional) Curl remaining hair in back

FINISHED!

Here’s a bit of a bird’s eye view for you!

You could totally make this even more boho-chic by adding some little flowers or other accessory near the bun. It’s such a simple style, but looks very pretty in the end. If you like fishbone braids, be sure to check out all of our fishbone hairstyles here.
