I think we can all agree that a great DIY or handmade gift can mean so much more than the most expensive gift in the store. Handmade gifts are made with love and are personalized specifically for the recipient. Care and thought goes into the entire process, from the idea to the completion of the project. They’re the best kind of present.

So when I had the opportunity to join the “My Friends” Secret Santa Blog Tour with some of my favorite blogger friends, I jumped at the chance. But let me tell you that it was a lot harder than I anticipated. I had to create a DIY gift for another DIY blogger! No pressure there…

My Secret Santa partner is Wendi from H2O Bungalow. I met Wendi at the Haven Conference over the summer and immediately knew how fabulous she was! She lives at the beach, so her typical Christmas is a little different from mine. She enjoys the sun on Christmas Day and I enjoy the frigid temps. When deciding what to create for her gift, I wanted to stick with her “coastal Christmas” vibe. I grabbed some burlap, an artist canvas and my Silhouette machine…

The first step in creating this DIY gift is to cover a basic artist canvas with burlap. I wrapped the burlap around the canvas and attached it with my staple gun.

Using my Silhouette machine, I cut out two phrases…”Merry Christmas” and “Life is Better at the Beach.” Then I joined the two to create my Christmas message.

My original thought was to use the outline of the letters as a stencil, but the paper was too thin. I changed my mind and then used the real letters. I used fabric decoupage on the back of the letters.

Once the letters were on the canvas, I went over them with more of the decoupage to help seal and secure them.

Once it was finished, I packed it up and sent it to the Sunshine State…

It’s an adorable ornament filled with real sand, shells, starfish and a cute “beach” sign. I love my little piece of the beach!
