Christmas Stenciled Placemat

How do you feel about stenciling? It’s one of those things that you either love or hate. I think stenciling can be intimidating at first and it definitely takes practice.

The first few projects I completed were not great, but they helped me to develop my skills and learn tips and tricks along the way. One of the key factors that I discovered is that you must use a good quality stencil and without a doubt, the stencils from Royal Design Studio are some of the best I’ve used.

So when they asked me if I’d like to try out some of their stencils from their Christmas collection, I jumped at the chance. I chose the Herringbone Pattern Holiday Stencil and the Reindeer Christmas Stencil, knowing that I wanted to layer them. Using some burlap fabric, I created a Christmas Stenciled Placemat.

Have you seen their Christmas collection of stencils? If not, you should definitely take a peek. They have also collaborated with Jennifer Rizzo to create some that are absolutely adorable. You can see those beautiful stencils here.

I love anything in herringbone. This stencil is amazing because it’s large enough to stencil a wall, but you can also use it to stencil something smaller, like this placemat or a runner.

Because I’m using black, white and burlap for my Christmas decor this year, I decided to paint the herringbone design in white and the reindeer in black.

When I stencil a craft project like this, I prefer to use a dabber and literally “dab” the paint onto the stencil. Also, when you stencil burlap, you have to apply a little more paint than normal, because the weave is so loose. The extra paint builds up the color better.

Once the white paint was dry, I started the reindeer stencil. I decided to place it in the bottom right corner of the placemat.

I love the reindeer! Isn’t he absolutely adorable?!

I’ve used my placemat in my foyer vignette. It’s the perfect backdrop for my dough bowl filled with my Burlap Wrapped Gift Boxes.

Now I plan to make 5 more to fill my table. This Christmas stenciled placemat works fabulous by itself on a vignette, but I can’t wait to create more. It’s such a great project and the Royal Design Studio stencils are the best ones to work with. They are amazing quality and the choices are wonderful. Have fun shopping and getting creative!

Happy Holidays!
