The Cookie Puzzle

Light Fixture Makeover

Mr. Cookie Puzzle and I are building a new home. When I say WE....I mean WE...as in WE are doing most of the work ourselves. We have contracted some stuff. like the framing, electrical and plumbing, but for the most part, we are doing this ourselves.

We are also doing this with the goal of moving into this house debt free. Using our savings, doing most of the work ourselves and getting creative, we are finally getting to the point where that goal is in site.

I thought it would be fun to share with you some of the creative ways we have been saving money. Light fixtures are expensive...so I updated a fixture that Mr. Cookie Puzzle picked up at an auction.

Here she is in all her 1980's shiny brass beauty. When he first brought it home....my first reaction was EEEEEEEWWWWWW!

But...I was able to transform her into something I was proud to have in our new home.

I took the light fixture apart, removing all the glass panels and used painters tape to cover the sockets. Then using my new best friend, Rust-Oleum Universal, All Surface Matallic Satin in Oil Rubbed Bronze, I painted the yucky shiny brass surfaces.

It update the look even further, I picked a ceiling medallion
at Lowe's and painted it with the same paint.

I used these medallions several places in the house, they are light weight,
take paint beautifully, and really add a special touch to what
would be a pretty simple light fixture.

Being new to this all DIY, re-purpose blogging thing, I did not take step by step pictures, but the process is pretty simple. I just taped or removed what I did not want to paint, and painted the rest. I used almost two cans to get complete coverage. When it was dry, I re-assembled it and I had a totally new fixture.

For less then $20, I now have a beautiful oil-rubbed bronze light fixture in my new home, much better then the how much it could have cost me. Every little bit helps.
I/we got pretty creative with light fixtures in the house, I will try to get pictures and share more with you.
Getting pictures of light fixtures is NOT an easy process. Do you have any tips? Do you take pictures with the lights ON or OFF?
Anyway...have a wonderful Monday...catch ya next time.
