Free Crochet Pattern...Happy Apple Applique!



This cheerful little apple will brighten anyone's day! Perfect for back to school on a backpack or as a gift to a hardworking teacher. Also lovely to add to your fall decor or a favorite market tote.

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn (yarn shown is Red Heart Super Saver in "Cherry Red" "Spring Green" "Coffee" and "Black")
  • H (5.0 mm) Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry/Yarn Needle
  • Scissors

Sizing:

  • 3 inches across at widest points
  • 4 inches tall from top of stem to bottom of apple


Instructions For Main Part of Apple (Red Yarn):

Foundation: Chain 4 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 4, then work 11 dc into the center of the ring, then join with a slip stitch to close circle and fasten off.
Round 2: Chain 2 and work a hdc in the first st. Work 2 dc in the next st, 2 tr in the next st, 2 dc in the next st, 2 hdc in the next st, 2 hdc in the next st, 2 hdc in the next st, 2 hdc in the next st, 2 dc in the next st, 2 tr in the next st, 2 dc in the next st, 2 hdc in the next st. Join with a sl st to close round and fasten off.

Apple Stem (worked in brown yarn):

Tie brown yarn to the topmost stitch of apple. Chain 6. Work a sc in the second ch from the hook, and in each ch across. Work a slip stitch at the base of the stem, making sure to work it into the red part as well. Fasten off.

Stemless Leaf (Make 1, worked in green yarn):

Note: Leave tails intact for sewing to apple later.

Worm (Make 1, worked in green yarn):

Ch 6. In the second ch from the hook, work a slip stitch. Work a slip stitch in each chain across to the end of row. Fasten off and leave tails intact for seaming to apple later.


Finishing & Assembly:

Weave in all ends from red apple and leaf. Sew leaf to apple as shown using tails. Weave in ends from leaf. Sew worm onto apple as shown using tails. Weave in ends from worm. To make face, use black yarn to make two french knot eyes (link to tutorial below) and same yarn to make a backstitch smile (link to tutorial below).

Attach applique to fabric items with a needle and thread or to crocheted/knitted items with a yarn needle and matching yarn. All finished!
