Microwave Hot Cocoa for One

Do you buy those hot cocoa packets from the grocery store? Did you know you can make your own hot cocoa almost as quickly without paying for additives and packaging. You probably have the ingredients on hand right now – nothing new to buy. All you need is milk, sugar, and cocoa. And, while I used plain white sugar and cow’s milk, you can use whatever sweetener or milk you prefer.

Plus, you can add whatever flavor you want. I added a few drops of vanilla to this, but you can add cinnamon or caramel or whatever you like. Now, I’m not knocking homemade mixes either. They are awesome – especially for gifts. But, if you have the same issue with chocolate that I do, you know that the mixes disappear fast, and I don’t really need that much hot cocoa. That being said, if you need to make several of these – say for the family, it still doesn’t take much longer than the packets. Just make them back-to-back. You could probably even do more than one in the microwave at a time, but be careful. It will take longer, and if you don’t keep a good eye on them, they will boil over.

Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • Optional: flavor as you like. I used a couple of drops of vanilla this time, but chopped caramel or a sprinkle of cinnamon work well too, whipped cream and chocolate syrup for garnish

Instructions
  1. In a mug, stir together sugar and cocoa.
  2. Add milk and stir well.
  3. Microwave on high 1 minute. Stir until everything is well combined.
  4. Microwave at 30 second intervals stirring in between until cocoa reaches desired hotness. I usually do 3 intervals.
  5. Watch it carefully as it can boil over. Mine doesn't as long as I don't go over 30 seconds, but not all microwaves are the same.
