Types of Clasps for your Jewelry
How often have you experienced difficulties when opening and closing a clasp on a necklace or bracelet? How often have you been disappointed when it breaks? Well, choosing the right clasps can fix these problems. You can choose them to match any jewelry piece you’re making, and to use them is actually easy.
In jewelry design, choosing a clasp often seems like an afterthought. This is quite reasonable given that the main point of jewelry is usually the beads that is used to make the piece of jewelry. However, a clasp is essential to end a piece of jewelry. There are many types of clasps for you to choose from! Examples of the clasps that are used are: toggle clasps, hook clasps, magnetic clasps, lobster clasps, box clasps, etc.
We will be going into more detailed on some of the different types of clasps and how and which you should use for your jewelry.
Toggle clasps require pressure to keep them closed. This clap makes it a perfect choice mostly for necklaces, since the weight of all the beads will be at the front of the necklace that keeps the clasp shut. It can be worn in front as part of the necklace’s main accent piece, or it can be in the usual nape position that adds an interest to an area, as well.
Using magnetic clasps for my personal jewelry is my preference because they are so simple to open. Magnetic clasps are the clasp of choice if you want to fasten your jewelry quickly and easily. These are also ideal for people who have trouble working with tiny clasps. These clasps are secured with strong magnets that keeps them even more securely closed. These versatile clasps come in wide and variety of styles, sizes, and materials.
Lobster claw clasps are typical, fashionable clasp choice. It uses tension from a spring-loaded mechanism to keep it firmly closed. You can choose either from a split or jump ring to attach to the other end of your necklace or bracelet for the claw to grab on.
Box clasps often have designs or inlaid gemstones that make the jewelry a truly beautiful finished piece. One half of a box clasp is usually hollowed out, while the other half has a band of metal that can be folded over. You can choose from gold-filled, sterling silver, and base metal in several handy shapes and sizes.
