Do your own hair

Is it really possible to give yourself a good blow out at home in under seven minutes? With an affordable blowdryer that doesn’t scare the dog with its noise?

After witnessing Conair’s dynamic Director of Education, Andrea Sampson, do one on stage to the tune of Bon Jovi’s living on a prayer at a media event back in July at The ROM in Toronto for the launch of their new blow dryer, I’m a believer.

Utilizing technology that provides more torque and less noise output, the 3Q by Infiniti Pro, ($120 at Canadian Tire) blow dryer – “3Q” standing for quick, quiet and quality – is the latest tool in Conair’s 50 history to provide salon-quality hair at home. To the left is my hairstylist friend, Denise, with the 3Q dryer at the retrospective at the event. Did you know that Conair has been around since 1959? You’ve probably have had one or two small Conair appliances kicking around.

When I saw this little yellow blow dryer from the eighties I was hit with nostalgia – it was the first blow dryer that my parents bought when they came to Canada in 1980. It was kept in the medicine cabinet in the family bathroom, and I remember it being pretty loud for a little thing.

As someone who has spent a small mortgage on salon blow-dries over the years (you’re welcome, Mickey!) the new and improved 3Q blow dryer excites me (Christmas is just around the corner, you know. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink).

In the meantime, as we head into the Fall, lots of us are thinking about a tress transformation. I spoke with Sampson, who has been with the hair care megabrand for seven years, to give us some tips.

Andrea Sampson

To start, how did you get involved with the hair industry?

From a young age my dream was always to be a hair stylist. I was cutting hair before I could walk. My first job was at Nappy’s Hair shop.

What do you predict to be hot for Autumn?

The fall season always starts with strong rich and bold colors – reds, plum and coppers – along with a strong fringe and graduated lengths.

Why should women bother changing their hair seasonally?

I believe that change prolongs life. For a woman, changing her hair colour allows her to bring out her alter ego by enhancing her own beautiful look every time. This keeps you young!

Conair seems to always be evolving by making accessible time-saving tools. What are some new ones that you are most excited about?

Conair recently launched two time-saving tools perfect for the man and woman on the go. The Even Cut by Conair for Men allows men to maintain a short, even cut in the comfort of their own home. The 3Q by InfinitiPro by Conair is a powerful new blowdryer with a brushless motor that gives quality results, quickly and quietly every time.

Tell me something about your skincare regime. Is it also focused on time-saving?

I have combination skin. I’ve never had a facial as it takes too long. I simply moisturize twice daily.

What advice would you give to the woman who is intimidated by doing her own hair at home?

Go to the salon! But seriously, use social media as your teacher. Youtube has millions of hair tutorials for all hair types. Select your top three styles and practice as often as possible. Before you know it, you’ll be a pro.

If all else fails, what is one hair style that seems to be flattering on all woman and can be done quickly?

Never underestimate the power of a pony. It’s good for business, pleasure or play. Whether it’s sleek and sophisticated or loose and whimsical , a ponytail is a girl’s best friend for a go-to quick polished look. Leave it out, pin it up. A ponytail can be perfect for all occasions for any woman and it takes no time.

Cindy Crawford once said that changing your hair colour is the #1 anti-ager. Do you agree with her?

I love it! It’s a bold and beautiful statement. Good Hair = Fabulous! It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing as long as your hair is done.

Don’t colour your hair the same week as when you’re getting a chemical peel done.
