Reading Aloud To Others Is Boring

It’s easy to take things out of context. All you need to do is take a single sentence, leave everything around it out, and you can give something a completely new meaning, twist words, in effect, to make a point. So it is with this single Tweet which, as you can guess from my comment, isn’t a single Tweet at all, but part of a continuing conversation – or monologue in this case!

Taking it in context, the writer – Anthony – was at a reading. An author stood before an audience and read from his or her works, and it was boring. I can understand that, I’ve experienced it myself. An author who can write, but cannot necessarily convey feelings, emotions when reading their own works out.

Reading aloud, in and of itself, is far from boring. You can change a story with intonation, put life into it, bring action and emotion. Reading aloud is one of the pleasures for small children – it certainly was for me as a child – but the reader, sometimes, needs to be removed from the writer. They are two completely different people who see things in a different light. Listening to someone read, someone who is really putting themselves into the tale being narrated, can be one of the great joys of life.
