Change Your “Self-Talk”

What is Self-Talk?

“Every waking moments we talk to ourselves about the things we experience. Our self-talk, the thoughts we communicate to ourselves, in turn control the way we feel and act.”- John Lembo

“Self-talk” is the thoughts you believe about yourself and the words that you say to yourself. Self-talk can be negative or positive. Our thoughts are the building blocks of our lives. We act out of what we believe in our minds and in our hearts. We have a responsibility to protect our minds. Negativity drains our energy and brings undesired results into our lives. A positive mindset makes us stronger physically and spiritually, and it creates ripple effects that can influence and change the world around you for the better. Our mind is a powerful tool and instrument, and we must learn how to govern it with truth.

Negative self talk usually comes in the form of fear and anxiety. Fear paralyzes and causes confusion and doubt. Fear tends to be a bully or a rude guest that tries to overwelcome his stay. It will try to define your worth and it’s aim is to bring you shame…this weird, uneasy sense that somehow you are “different” or “less than” or “too much”. You are enough! You are amazing! You must step in and redirect your thoughts in a new direction.

Kick the Negative Self-Talk OUT!

One day I came to my senses and served an eviction notice to negativity, saying “You have got to go!” In order to master your life, you must learn to be the master of your thoughts.

“He who would be useful, strong, and happy must cease to be a passive receptacle for the negative, beggarly, and impure streams of thought; and as a wise householder commands his servants and invites his guests, so must he learn to command his desires and to say, with authority, what thoughts he shall admit into the mansion of his soul.” – James Allen

Focus on Honesty and Positive Growth

Regularly schedule a time to do a “Soul Inventory” as ask yourself important questions:

  • What did I do today?
  • What did I feel today?
  • What am I grateful for today?
  • What challenged me today?
  • How can I overcome that challenge?
  • What did I savor today?
  • What do I need to release from my heart?
  • How did I shine today?
  • What is the lesson of the day?
  • How can I grow from today?
  • The positive thought I need to embrace so I can continue to progress is__________ .

You can journal your answers in a notebook or type them on your computer. The important part of changing your self-talk is realizing that you must be your greatest ally. Focus on what is going right in your life, and master your thoughts.
