Dear White People

Dear White People, Go see this movie!

And Dear Black People, Y’all go see it too.

I don’t typically, well I actually never have reviewed a movie on my blog before, but ‘Dear White People‘ is such a fab find that I want to share it with as many people I possibly can.

‘Dear White People’ is about “being a black face in a very white place,” and the story of four African-American students at an Ivy League college.

Synopsis: The movie follows four African-American Ivy League students and how they deal with not only being black on a predominately white campus, but also how they sort out where they fit in among their race, peers, and family.

Cast: Tessa Thompson from ‘Tyler Perry’s Colored Girls,’ Tyler James Williams star of ‘Everybody Hates Chris,’ and Mr. All State himself Dennis Haysbert are some of the recognizable faces in the film.

Thoughts: Dear White People, written by Justin Simien, is witty, well thought out, and down right brilliant.

And if I can keep it all the way honest it’s the first black movie in a long time that made me think.

Don’t get me wrong recent movies like ’12 Years a Slave’ and ‘Fruitvale Station’ were thought-provoking in their own right. However ‘Dear White People’ deals with the complexity of race, racism, self-identity, and stereotypes in the here and now.

And as someone who survived attending predominately white schools from 2nd grade to my sophomore year of college, I could relate to many of the incidents that occurred between the black students and their white counterparts. Especially the unsolicited touching of black hair by white people. Which, side note dear white people, is always a no.
