Say Hi: A Lesson in a Hi

“…and a little child will lead them.” Isiah 11:6

Yesterday a 3 year old reminded her mom an enthusiastic, "Hi" is still very relevant in a age of stank faces. And a child will lead them.

Recently at a 3 year old girl caught me smiling as I gazed happily at her sporting a fierce baby afro and a fabulous blinged out headband. As I stood there swelling with pride at how cute she was in her natural state, itty bitty fro and all, she turned to me and enthusiastically said one word,”Hi!”

I was so tickled at this child’s ability to be so care free with greeting a stranger that I laughed gleefully, gave her my grandest “Hi” back, and immediately told her how cute her and her headband was. She gave me the biggest smile, said “Thank you,’ and then it happened…

She looked at her momma and said, “Say hi!”

Listen, I stopped dead in my tracks.

Not because she was so darn cute, and had great manners, but that at 3 years old she understood better than her momma that a simple “Hi” and a smile can bring so much joy.

Funny, yet sad, how children are the one’s with the best social skills sometime.

I mean think about it, when was the last time you stopped to say hi or even give someone a smile?

We are in an age where people are too busy trying to fake hustle on Facebook, grind on Twitter, and flex on Instagram to pull ourselves away from our smartphones to flash our best smile and throw a “Hey, how are you doing” to anyone sharing our personal space in public.

And, its super duper non-awesome sauce sad.

Everyone needs a smile and a “Hi” in their life! And I’m not talking about for the receiver, but for the giver.

Just recently I read a pic that rings true in my own life. The pic said, “Smile. It will either warm their heart or piss them off. Either way you win!”

So the next time you get all selfish with your pearly whites and ability to vocalize, remember a smile and “Hi” is more for you than them anyways. Oh, and a smile keeps the stank faces away!

When was the last time you said hi to a stranger?

XOXO, Miss Foodie Fab!
