FAUX FISHING

On Saturday we went “fishing” for the two little people in our family it was the very first time. We used real rods, with bait trying to catch real live rainbow trout – except instead of a lake or ocean, it was at a swimming pool. I know it sounds super weeeird, but hear me out it was actually pretty neat. A local community center (Scadding Court, for those of you in Toronto) emptied out their swimming pool, filled it with fresh water and live trout. Toronto residents could pay admission to borrow a rod and try to catch a fish…in a pool. It still sounds a bit odd though, right? I guess it was a little, but it was also really fun. Both kids, especially King have been asking to go fishing, like a lot (I lost count after a few thousand requests). Chris and I always sorta thought it would be a long while before we could make that happen (though Toronto is situated along Lake Ontario, I personally would not want to fish in those city waters), turns out we were wrong because voila we stumbled upon a city fishing pool.
Harlow ended up being the only one who caught a fish, while the rest of us got a crash course in patience. After we tried and tried and tried to each catch a fish (Chris more than me) we threw in our hats and went to get Harlow’s prize fish cleaned and cooked. See fishing in a swimming pool, it was weird but what a memory it made for the kids (and us). It also helped illustrate some things we had been teaching the kids about food. King and Harlow have been extremely curious about where their food comes from, often going through periods of time where they don’t want to eat meat, because of where it comes from (which is adorable, those sweet little empathetic hearts). This day, even though it took a lot of explaining that fish don’t actually come from swimming pools – helped to show them where food comes from and some of the process that happens before the food just happens upon their plate.
Watching “our” fish get cooked (at one of the vendors that is housed in a row of shipping containers, it’s called Market 707 and it’s such a tres cool use of previously unused/ugly space) and the fish Harlow caught all ready to share at lunch, plus some samosas for good measure. It was a really interesting, fantastic little event – we left happy and full, can’t ask for a better day.
And then we did as we usually do, we walked around for a bit until Chris had to head off to work. Every few blocks there was a festival or an event of some sort, Toronto in the summer is so full of life and fun – even the kids like to just stop and dance sometimes. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend, I took tons of photos this weekend so will have probably another…maybe two posts with our (well at least their) smiling faces.
