Superhero Party Ideas

Would you like for your little guy (or gal) to feel like s/he can do anything…at least for a day? Consider hosting a superhero themed birthday party. Becoming master of their universe is pretty serious business for kids, you know. That might be why the superhero themed birthday party is so popular. Here are some of my favorite suggestions of how to host a super superhero party that will have the birthday kid—and the guests—flying high!

Superhero Birthday Party Ideas

There are a lot of licensed superhero characters in popular culture. If your birthday celebrant has a clear favorite, of course you’ll want to feature that hero. I’ve also seen parties that included a team of the superhero characters and that works, too. Another option is to use the term “superhero” but don’t attach a well-known persona; you’ll be free to create any super powers you’d like.

Use a lot of primary colors in your decorations. Pennants, banners and balloons add to the festivities, plus they’re easy to make. City skyline silhouettes or cardboard boxes decorated as city buildings make great dessert table décor. Don’t forget to add thought bubbles with “Zap!” “Pow!” and “Bam!” Include superhero figures or silhouettes, too.

As far as food goes, even if you are serving simple sandwiches and juice, give them names like “muscle building nutrition” and “super-strength elixir”. It’s amazing how everyday food is more appealing to kids with silly names that mesh with the theme—you might get them to eat more veggies!

What’s a superhero without his cape or mask? Costume pieces add a lot of fun to this theme. If buying ready-made costumes is not in your party budget, it’s easy to make personalized versions even if you’re not an accomplished seamstress. Velcro and felt cut-outs can be hot-glued to simple fabric squares or over-sized t-shirts can be used (cut away the front and sleeves, leaving the neckband and back).

Posing in a photo booth is a favorite activity for all age ranges. Cardboard box telephone booths (think Superman) are fun, but any set-aside area with an interesting backdrop works. Here are some additional activities:

• Decimate the villain piñata
• Decorate your own superhero cut-out
• String maze; superheroes must make it through
• Obstacle course
• Relay races
• Capture the “villain” (Dad or big brother)

A superhero themed birthday party allows kids to leap tall buildings and rescue an entire city, all while enjoying the safety of staying home—plus you get to be there to take pictures! Super!
