In the Hands of Consumers: Digital Tools for Stress-free Design - A #DesignLUX Conversation

The Technological Revolution.

The last few decades have been a virtual whirlwind of increasing technological awareness. When once upon a time the computer was limited only to those who had the room, budget, and security clearance to afford one, today, over 30% of the world's population carries a personal computer with them in their back pocket by way of a Smart Phone. Technology hasn't simply come into our pockets but, instead, into all aspects of our personal and professional lives. Stoves can now email. Thermostats can analyze energy usage. Automobiles can call dealers for service on your behalf.

“Interior Design isn’t brain surgery. Relax and enjoy the ride. No one is going to die on the table.”
— Denise McGaha, Interior Designer

The Interior Design profession and marketplace has not been immune to the influence of technology. In fact, the industry has been radically transformed by the availability of tools available to both professionals and consumers alike. Online curation site Pinterest had, as of 2013, 70 million users, with home décor representing 40% of their over 30 billion pins. Home remodeling and design platform Houzz represents over 500,000 design and construction professionals and sees over 25 million views monthly. Online-only retailer Wayfair generated $1.3 billion in 2014 with over 3.2 million active customers.

As we look to help software developer BuildEffective.com celebrate their new online kitchen remodel summary generator, MyDreamProjector which unofficially launched this past Friday, #DesignLUX will be taking a closer look at the tools available to consumers to guide them through the interior design and home remodel process. From iOS and Android apps to digital websites, we'll share our favorites, ask you for yours, and possibly help you discover a few new tools to add to your arsenal.
