I’ll Drink to That

I always wonder why we’re drawn to the people we are. And why they seem to show up right when we need them—whether you realize it or not. I surely didn’t.

When I first met Yasmein, we were seniors at Penn State, taking COMM 360. We were responsible for slicing together audio of quotes supporting our narrative that would, in turn, help us to become journalists.

Then she went abroad and I got caught up in, Lord knows what.

Then in 2010, I started this blog. She finds it or Facebook or something. She emails me to say that she read a particular post and to keep my head up. Fast-forward 3 years, countless 8-page emails, and phone calls, she came to visit me for the first time last June.

I was nervous. Would it be the same? It’s so weird to think that you can know so much about someone without ever being in their presence. Thank you, Internet?

In reality, it was better. She had come for a vision board party. As we sat around drinking too-strong margaritas and spelling out some semblance of what we hope life brings us in the near future, we had no idea what was in store for us.

She said she wanted to live in the New York area. She’d been saying she wanted a blog. She wasn’t sure she was ready to be engaged. All things that have happened.

We sat in Central Park, noshing on pizza (guise, that I prepared with my hands) and candy, sipping champagne, talking about just that. In 10 years, we’re going to look back on this day. Whether we finally land those jobs we think will validate us or end up running our own mini-media empires, we’ll remember how we used to be 2 writers with visions of changing the world. And we did… ours.

And I don’t know, call me emo or sensitive, but I’ll drink to that.
