Deception Pass

I’ve been doing this weird thing lately called hiking. It’s where you walk around outside, except up mountains, hills and beaches, in sneakers instead of hills and out in the wilderness.

I did something like this in Nevada, except it included a lot more sage brush and watching my ex boyfriend hunt than in Washington. Here, there are lots of pretty plants, rivers and waves to look at. A few weeks ago I went on an adventure to Deception Pass in Anacortes, WA.

It was a drive, a ferry ride and then more of a drive to get there, but, man, it was worth it. You do need a discover pass to get in, but the person who drove had one so that was pretty painless. The first beach you park at is pretty packed. but the population of the trail got smaller the further in we went.

There were a lot of locations where you could sit on rocks and watch the waves, bird and sea animals float by, and the trail went in and out through the trees. We brought snacks but I’d suggest bringing a decent sized picnic. There isn’t really anywhere around to get a good, quick meal. Also, the bathrooms were questionable – but I always assume they will be when you’re going to a park hours away from the city.

The pass itself is a long bridge. Under the bridge are a ton of whirlpools that you can kind of see here. They’re gorgeous. I’m afraid of heights so I don’t know if I fully appreciated them, but it was a great view from the top of the bridge down on the water. Across this bridge there’s even a beach with a tide pool. My phone was nearly dead by then so I don’t have any photos, but there’s a folk tale of mermaids that lived in the area. Isn’t that cool?

Unfortunately, no mermaids were spotted.

Have you ever been to Deception Pass? How about seen a mermaid? :)
