Victorian Gardens: Central Park’s Hidden Gem–or is it?

The Saturday that I ran my best race ever, I took the boys to Victorian Gardens. I am sure that is how I recover so well from long runs, walking and running after the children for the rest of the day!

Victorian Gardens is a mini amusement park for young kids buried at the beginning of Central Park. You can’t see this place from the outside you have to go all the way in the park to find this mini play land.

And by mini–I mean mini. There are about 10-12 rides in the space. Most of them could be ridden by my 5 year old but the 2 year old could only get on a select few. One thing about this place is that it was pretty expensive, just the three of us (baby is under 36 inches so he was free) for general admission came out to $40. We weren’t sure how many rides the 5yo would want to get on so we got him a unlimited ride pass which we would later learn was not worth it.

Since the entrance was free for the 2yo but riding the rides was not we had to buy him tickets as well. Another $10. The rides were super cute, very tame, nothing earth shattering. They were all about 3 or 4 tickets each. They loved the train ride and the little speed boat ride. After doing some of those a few times, we (I) got bored rather quickly. It was also extremely hot so that wasn’t helping at all.

There is a little indoor Cafe that we took a break in, but we quickly realized that the sun had drained us ALL of our energy. We used all the baby’s tickets and really if we would have known how quickly we would tire of the park we would have gotten a ticket package instead of an unlimited pass.

If you are in Central Park and you want to do something with the kids take them to the Central Park Zoo. It is moderately priced and they will learn something. Victorian Gardens is horrifically over priced and I want all my coins back! For me personally it was not worth the money. However, the kids had a good time so I can’t count it as a complete loss.

Have you ever taken the kids to a fun place only to realize it’s not so fun? What is your favorite attraction in Central Park?
