How Much Do You Share Online?

There have been many posts about people who share too much online, but what about the folks that share too little–is that even a thing?

Everyday in my Facebook newsfeed people are sharing so much, most of the time too much. I have seen so many “uncomfortable” Facebook status’ that make me cringe. As a matter of fact, when I took my year off Facebook a few years ago, I was stunned to see how much more people were revealing when I got back into it (at that time for the sake of the blog page).

All the updates come together and form a story in everyone’s head. Some judge, and some hold on to the things they read one time. What most fail to realize that whether the person can control what they type or not, you are never getting the full story on social media.

Social media is a beautiful place where we can lay down all of the roses and lilies in our life then wait for people to tell us how beautiful they smell and look. What is stunning though is that no one knows about the other side of things, the side that doesn’t put them in the most favorable light, and may damage that beautiful, pristine reputation.

For example, I have made a conscious decision not to blog about my career, I never have, simply because a) I value my job and I have *not* read the social media policy and I am not trying to get let go over a blog post…who has time for that? b) my job is a safe place for me–not in terms of employment–but in terms of the fact that I am confident and skilled in what I do. Keeping it separate from the blog is the best thing I can do because they are completely unrelated–and c) my focus here is fitness, family, fashion and fun–none of it which work falls under. I’ve mentioned before that I have no plans to turn this blessing of a blog into a full time gig. I have a career path in mind and at 31, I am still climbing that ladder. (Besides I am not built for this blog life like that). As much as I adore this blog I didn’t work my entire tail off getting my Masters in Public Administration for it. I did it for my dream. But I digress.

The next time you ever feel like you aren’t winning in life because your Facebook friend hit the lottery and just purchased a new car and and 18 bedroom house (or something along those lines) just remember that there is another side. There is always another (sometimes darker) side to the story. The flowers may look so beautiful but they are perfectly crafted for your vision. You never know what it took to get to get there, how hard people worked or didn’t work for it.

Some folks are great at putting on the best show. I don’t know how they do it because it seems insanely exhausting. For me personally I believe in the transfer of energy so if I share a negative status update I am essentially transferring those negative feelings to another. I bet you can think of something that you read in your timeline that rubbed you the wrong way. I have a 90% positive Facebook post policy–if I see something negative I block with no hesitation. No thanks.

Lord knows my flaws and issues can fill an entire book, however, why should I put my worries on everyone else? My husband and best friend hear enough of it Social media should be friendly, fun, engaging, positive and full of learning. Anything else…well, don’t be fooled.

What do you think? Share it all or keep somethings to yourself? Do you fall into the Facebook/Fakebook trap?
