The Beast (Ch. 1)

“Do you really want to do this?” I nervously asked my sister as I help her adjust her gown for tonight’s ceremony. “Of course I want to.” She said to the point where it seemed conceited but some yet beautiful. She had a way with words due to her velvet voice. Everything sounded gorgeous. “But…” my voice could only trail off. I knew where this would go if it all proceeded. She would be cold like our father and with her only being person I could get along with, I knew things would go down for me. “Besides, If I don’t I would let Papa and the rest of the neighborhood down.” “Who gives a shit about them?” I spat. To me, I never cared about them, which lead them to not care about me. It was a win, win. Except for my sister who everyone and their fucking dogs looked up to. I knew she had to do it. But seriously? To this beast? Her voice was soft. “Faye.” Scarlett turned around and looked at me with her tender crystal blue eyes. It was like looking into the mirror. A mirror that made you like 100x prettier than you actually are. Scarlett and I both had reddish blonde hair and sky blue eyes but it all just seemed to look amazing on her. “Fine. Go!” I said it more venom that I needed to. Scarlett didn’t look the least bit offended and straight back up to fix her green sparkling dress for the last time. I snuck a glance at my purple flowery dress. I felt like a flower girl.
“I don’t see what’s so wrong about it.” She said. “Wrong? That thing is a beast!” “It’s not as ferocious as you.” She giggled. “Fuck you.” I was starting to be a bit at ease. “Besides.” Her voiced elongated the word. “I have a surprise for you.” “Is it getting out of this?” I played. “No.” she laughed. I sat in the nearest seat and slumped in it. It was a comfortable chair. One enough to make you fall asleep in an instant. “Well if it’s anything else then it has to be food.” I yawed. “How about me?” said a dark booming voice behind me. I turned to see a tall man, no older than my sister, with long black hair and suit to match. His eyes were glowing red. I knew those eyes. Everyone knew those eyes. Just that voice caught me off guard. “Vincent?” I said, practically screaming. He smiled, his eyes darkening in mischief as I run into his arms. “The one and only.” “I though you weren’t coming back until next week.” “But then I would have missed your sister’s ceremony.” He sounded disappointed but I knew he was just playing with me. “I wish you didn’t.” he just rolled his eyes “I’ve missed you guys.” He said softly. “We’ve miss you too.” Scarlet said from across the room. “It’s been so long. Back then I was taller than you and was able to tackle you whenever I could.” Vincent’s face twisted for a quick second before turning back to a smile and laughter. “Yea I remembered those moments. Fond, back aching moments.” I punched him for good time sake. “Does anybody know you’re here?” I asked. “Only the people that live here. I wanted the talk of the town to be about Scarlett.” I could tell, that she was smiling behind us. “I rather it be about you than this.” He laughed and let go of me, but his dark eyes never left mine. “Don’t worry.” he said. “Everything is going to be okay. Nothing bad is going to happen. I’ll be in the audience if you need me.” I nodded. “Best surprise ever!” I squealed. “Anyway, I’m not only here to say hello. Let me just ruin the moment here for a sec’. I’m initially because I have a message for you two.” “We’re ready to start?” Scarlet asked. Vincent smiled and held out his hand for her.He was right, he did ruin the mood. “Let’s start the time of your life.”
I was on the stage in our home’s dance hall with my sister and next to father who couldn’t keep his eyes off her. I could tell he was so proud of her. The way he stood up straight, his face glowing and the corners of his lips slightly curved upward on his old worn leather skin. The look made me want to barf. Arriving from the steps below was man. He is the person who helps links the creatures to the new ruler of it. There is no word for him, no even cares about them, so I created a name. Ceremonist. It fits the occasion. Usually they are confident and tall but this one, when he approached Scarlett, his body somewhat shaken. “What’s wrong with-“ coughing. My father coughed his way to shut me up. I took a deep breath and continued with the ceremony. I was about to give my sister her crown. It was apart of tradition. The younger siblings paid respect to the oldest by crowning her. Since we were the spawns of my father, I was the only one who had to crown her, and I seriously didn’t want to. But now I had to. There was no turning back. But I so badly wanted to run. If I could wish I would wish that my family would never have agreed to the contract with this beast. Why does this thing even exists and why did it now have to chain with Scarlett? I know the beast protects the family and I know every family has one but I just don’t like it. I can’t even tell what our beast is. I always fell asleep when time came to speak about it. Why did I have to live in a world where this type of magic is upon us? And why do I feel weird now? I shook to the cold slimy feeling and stared at my father who was glaring down to me. Behind me I could hear a bit of giggling. I must have zoned out for a second. I couldn’t help but blush for not myself, but for how embarrassed my sister and father must be. “Faye..” said the Ceremonist. Quickly I walked over towards Scarlett. She was knelt before me, her head bowed. I looked at the audience searching for red eyes. It wasn’t long until I found them, way in the back giving me the thumbs up and mouthing. You can do it. With shaky hands, I lowered the crown on her long locks. I let out a sigh. As if on cue, a dark roar rumbled through out the room, shaking it in its process. Everyone in the audience was taken aback as they struggled to hold on to anything. I glanced over to my father who eyes were dark with furry. Proceed. He mouth. And as so my sister rose from the ground, as elegantly as she could through the shaking floor grounds. The noise became louder. Then blackness swirled from behind the Ceremonist and covered the wall in the seconds. This made the audience scream in fear. I knew I wanted to to, but I just couldn’t get it out. The word that I could only spill was the whisper ‘sister?’ to Scarlett. She looked at me with eyes of terror and turned behind her to the scrabbling audience, all trying to make their way out the door. My father, tried his hardest to make them stay, but nothing was working. I don’t think this was ever part of the ceremony. I felt a push on my shoulder. It was from my sister. “Go!” she said, but though the loud screeching the darkness swallowing the room, I couldn’t focus on what my sister was saying. “What?” I yelled. “Run!” I only made it a few steps before I noticed that she wasn’t following me. “Let’s go!” I screamed, but she only shook her head. Gushes of wind arose sending objects flying, smashing and breaking the windows as it flew. The audience screamed even more. “I have to stay here.” “Why? It’s not safe.” I yelled. “The ceremony is not over. We have to finish it.” “Then I can’t leave.” I was apart of the ceremony and my family was here. I couldn’t leave them. “You’ve don your part.” Behind us, the floor started to break. “Now go. Hurry. Get everyone out of here and find Vincent.” “No! I’m not leaving you.” I yelled. Crackling of the floors again. “Go!” and with that nervous cry I did as I was told. Thankfully I knew this place like the back of my hand, and saw that no one left on the side wall were the floor to ceilings windows where. Little did they know that I was actually doors. I pushed through the doors and immediately ran out. It wasn’t long until the others found out that this was another escape route and they ran out, pushing me to the ground and burying me from under their feet. I felt weak after that. But with all the strength I looked up from outside my house and saw the bright lights through the windows darkening. But they weren’t lights. “Fire!” some screamed. My blood went cold. “Scarlett?” I breathed, dumbfounded. “Someone take out the fire.” “Hell no did you see what’s going on in there?” “Father?” “Get your…” Through the bickering and the sound of my heart pounding in my ears. I did not hear what happened next. But my eyes sure saw everything. My house crumbled down, extinguishing the fire with. I pulled back before the smoke hit me. Then everything went blurry and before I knew it... It was just blackness.
