DIY Simple Yarn Wall Hanging

There is a bit of a trend in the crafts and interiors world for wall hangings at the moment. I’ve seen some beautiful woven examples around the internet, but I thought I’d share a much easier project – one that will help you build up to giving that woven one a shot!

This is a super simple idea and the best thing about it? – you don’t have to be particularly accurate and you can kind of make it up as you go along!

Here’s what you’ll need…

Various yarn in complementing colours

A twig (or a piece of dowelling)

Scissors

beads

And here’s how it’s done…

Decide roughly on the length you want your wall hanging to be. If you want it to be 30cm, then double this and cut lengths of yarn to approx 60cm.

Fold your pieces of yarn in half, and simply loop them over your twig and pull tight, making a neat knot.

Continue doing this with each length of yarn, making sure to pull tight and pushing them tightly together on the twig.

This is the bit you can make up – feel free to do as many or as few strips in each colour of yarn. Rather than making it too uniform, try mixing up the widths of the blocks of colour to give it a random look.

Once you’ve filled right across the twig, add a few beads, again in random places to add some interest. You can either leave the ends of your yarn as is – or you can cut it straight or into a point. I’ve left mine au natural.

Finally take another length of yarn and tie it to each end of your twig so that you can hang your wall hanging.

You can play around with scale, types of wool, colour and embellishment, so have fun with getting lots of different looks!

Is this something you would try? What colours would you use?
