Trend Driven: Say Hello to the Blanket Coat

Over the last few years fashion has tired of trends. Sure, there are always a few zeitgeist-y buys (New Balance sneakers, the Kenzo sweatshirt, anything remotely ’90s) but gone are the days when you had to own a certain item. So it’s with great excitement that I report the following news: there’s a big trend brewing for Autumn/Winter 2014! Ladies, say hello to the blanket coat…

My two favourite collections from the year – Chanel Pre-Fall and Burberry Prorsum A/W – both championed the look, and I guarantee the style will be everywhere come September. I’m particularly excited because I always feel cold, so regularly walk around with a blanket draped over my shoulders, and now instead of looking like an escaped mental patient I’ll be ‘totally on trend’. So thanks for that Karl and Christopher, I owe you one!

There are two ways to wear the blanket coat: belted at the wait or draped nonchalantly over the shoulders. And don’t hesitate to experiment with layering either – I love the idea of pairing a classic camel coat with a aztec print blanket coat. It’s a great way to give last season’s winter coat a new look.

At the moment most retailers are still in summer sale mode, so there’s not a lot of new season stock to chose from. But a few blanket coats are floating around. So if you’re keen to buy into the trend early here’s a style for every budget…

Naturally the most expensive item is my favourite! How does this always happen?! Anyway, let me know if you’re also excited about this A/W trend and which blanket coat is your favourite.

UPDATE: Here’s Olivia Palermo looking fabulous in Burberry’s blanket poncho.
