Beauty Boost: Four Must-Try Lip Gloss and Lipstick Hybrids

Autumn has arrived and soon you’ll want to swap your summery lip colours for something deeper, richer and more intense. But as beauty trends change with the seasons so does the weather (duh!), and if you’re anything like me your lips will start to chap as soon as we reach October. So in order to keep your pout hydrated and wear this season’s heavily pigmented, matte colours try a lip gloss/lipstick hybrid. Here are four tried, tested and CTP-approved products to look out for…

Best bargain buy – Sephora Cream Lip Stain: I was in Paris last week, so I had a chance to nip into Sephora for a cheeky beauty binge. Every other blogger I was with headed straight for Sephora’s Cream Lip Stains, which apparently are “the best”, so I had to get in on the action and buy one too. And they are indeed very good – fabulously vivid colours, great staying power and a light gloss-to-matte formula. The only downside (other than the fact you can’t buy them in the UK) is the limited colour range. ‘Always Red’ and ‘Strawberry Kissed’ are lovely, but the other 8 shades are a bit forgettable.

Best for heavily pigmented colours – Hourglass Liquid Lipstick: If you’re looking for bold colours that last all day long you’ve come to the right place. The Hourglass Liquid Lipsticks apply like a silky gloss, yet within seconds they’ve set as a matte lipstick. ‘Icon’ – a deep red with blue undertones – is my favourite shade and is perfect for Autumn. However, these are the least hydrating formulas in this edit, so unfortunately regular lip balm application is a must when wearing them.

Easiest application – Dior Addict Fluid Stick: If you avoid wearing bold lip colours because you find it difficult to get a precise application you must try Dior’s Fluid Sticks. They’re so easy to use! The sponge brush is curved, almost looking like a heart cut in half, so it perfectly follows the shape of your lips, leading to a smooth application. They’re also the glossiest of the bunch and the most hydrating – which, in turn, means you need to reapply them more often than the others. However, that’s a small price to pay for such comfortable, eye-catching shades…

Best colour offering – Yves Saint Laurent Babydoll Kiss & Blush: The YSL Kiss & Blush stains also have curved brushes for easy application, but the finish is less glossy because they’re meant to be worn on lips and cheeks. I think all 12 colours are super flattering (I like ‘Pink Hedoniste’ and ‘Orange Fougueux’ for summer, whilst ‘Rouge Libertine’ is great for fall), and you’d definitely be able to find at least one shade you love in the collection. But be warned, like Hourglass Liquid Lipsticks, these do feel more comfortable when mixed with a little bit of lip balm.
