Rules of EtiKate: Royal Party Etiquette

Some people see the royal family as old, outdated, and stuffy. I believe that is a major misconception of today’s royal family. The royals know how to have fun and they definitely know how to throw a good party. What makes them distinct, however, is their ability to party with an air of sophistication and class, something that I admire greatly.

Whether you are headed to a royal garden party or a black tie soiree this month, or any range of parties in between, let this article serve as your guide for navigating your festivities.

RSVP!

When you receive an invitation to a party, read it carefully and follow the RSVP instructions. If it says to call the host by a certain date, be sure to do it. If the host is requesting an RSVP, he or she is probably trying to keep a close eye on the number of people attending and you should do your part to ease that process.

Go with the flow.

No one likes a Debbie Downer at a party. It is not polite to make a big fuss about what you want and don’t want to be doing at the party. Do what the host has planned, when they have it planned, without complaints. Keep in mind that if the roles were reversed, and you were hosting the party, you would not want a bunch of nay-sayers at your bash.

Know your alcohol limits.

Unless you are at a midnight rave, it is most likely not appropriate to drink to excess. Know yourself and know how many drinks will make you just a little tipsy and stick to that number. This way, you can maintain your manners and decorum while still having some fun.

Thank your host.

This point cannot be stressed enough. Thank your host when you enter the party and when you are leaving. If you feel comfortable, you should even bring a small gift to show your appreciation for all the host has done to set up the get-together. When all else fails, kind words in a thank you note will always speak volumes to demonstrate your gratitude.
