My Royal Closet: Gemma

Welcome to My Royal Closet! Each month, take a look into a different closet that has been royally-inspired by Kate. The Duchess of Cambridge has been a huge influence on our closets, and we want to share our favorite repliKates and outfits with you!

Meet Gemma: Gemma is a magazine editor from Hampshire and runs www.foodfashfit.com, a blog dedicated to food, fashion and fitness. One of her favourite fashion icons is the Duchess of Cambridge, whose style has influenced many purchases over the years!

Jaeger Kate Bag

I found this bag nestled in the Jaeger outlet store in Gunwharf Quays and snapped it up immediately, as I’d already purchased the same style in black patent, to match with my black Maddox wedges from LK Bennett! The combination of the gorgeous pebbly caviar-style leather and the gold fastening makes this reminiscent of Chanel’s iconic flap bag – a piece I hope to own one day. Until then, this compact and versatile bag more than earns its keep in my wardrobe twice over!

The bag’s strap is its major selling point for me, although the chain has a depressing tendency to tangle. I love the clutch style look that Catherine wore for this item, but the strap really is so useful I can’t imagine tucking it away inside! The bag is currently not available from Jaeger, but items often crop up on eBay.

Russell & Bromley New Dry Fur Trim Wedge Boot

These are by far my favourite ever winter boots. There are so many aspects of these shoes that I love, it can actually be difficult to prise them away from me during the colder months and convince me to wear anything else! These are definitely some of the most casual boots Catherine’s ever been seen wearing ‘on duty’, which is probably why they fit so well into my wardrobe.

Designed by Aquatalia (as are many of Catherine’s other Russell & Bromley boots), they feature weather-resistant black suede and a side zip. With care, you can almost certainly wear these during rainy periods, and with a quick brush over with a suede sponge, they’re back to looking tip top again. The wedge heel gives you height and confidence, yet they’re incredibly easy to walk in – I’ve clocked up miles in these with no problem at all.

My favourite part of these boots is definitely the fur trim. (In the US, these boots were also available with rabbit fur trim under the model name Neptune.) Playful, cosy and chic, these are the ultimate winter boots for almost any occasion, and thanks to the hardiness of the suede, a real investment piece for years to come. The wedges are still available to purchase online from Russell & Bromley.

Wilbur & Gussie Charlie Clutch

I am the first to admit, a clutch is hardly a staple item in anyone’s wardrobe. I like to think of myself as a passionate admirer of the form, rather than a slave to its function! However, there’s no denying the beauty of this Wilbur & Gussie clutch, in an elegant gold glitter fabric. (Fun fact – Jimmy Choo has used this exact same fabric for several of their shoes – including the Cosmic, which Catherine wears in black suede.) The silver clasp means you can pair this with gold or silver shoes, which makes it really versatile, and there’s even a hidden loop inside you can pull out to hang the bag from your wrist.

Wilbur & Gussie are now one of my favourite British brands for clutch bags, and despite what the austere simplicity of the gold glitter Charlie would suggest, their range is incredibly quirky. I love their range of clasps (which are usually based on animals and insects) and their whimsical prints! The gold glitter Charlie clutch is currently sold out, but the Charlie is always available in a range of fantastic colours on the site. I purchased another Charlie clutch in raw navy silk with an adorable ship motif on the clasp too – it was just too gorgeous to pass up!

Mint Velvet Grey Suede Plimsolls

These grey trainers have been spotted on Catherine multiple times, and it’s easy to see why they’re a wardrobe staple once you see a pair in the flesh. Comfortable and casual without being sloppy, the soft grey colour is surprisingly versatile, and looks amazing when paired with blue denim jeans.

Although slightly narrow, the shoes soften quickly, and are very comfortable. I love the logo on the back of the heel (which was instrumental in first IDing the item when it was initially spotted on the Duchess), as well as the dove grey shoelaces. Mint Velvet really knocked it out of the park when crafting these simple and elegant shoes – and I really wish I could get a pair in the navy suede too! These were a great buy, as you can wear them all year round in the UK. The shoes are currently available from Mint Velvet in grey and blue suede.

Oroton Odeion Clutch in Indigo

I snapped this up as soon as I saw it was available from Australian label Oroton – and then had to wait until August for it to arrive here in the UK! Worn on tour by Catherine, this was one of the few local pieces featured in her wardrobe. The unusual snakeskin finish makes this piece stand out to me – and I have to admit, although silver hardware isn’t my preference, it looks gorgeous when contrasted with the indigo shade.

Another great selling point for me was the shoulder strap – box clutches are absolutely gorgeous, but often impractical when it comes to social events, and invariably get jammed into your armpit when you try to juggle shaking hands, holding a glass, nibbling on a canapé and gesticulating wildly. Slung over one shoulder, box clutches look even more adorable, and, dare I say, slightly more casual and fitting for events not necessarily frequented by royalty! The piece has long since sold out in this blue colour, but is available in biscotti.
