Charity Spotlight: The HER Foundation

As you all know by now, the royal-watching community is buzzing with the exciting news that came from the Clarence House last Monday. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting Royal Baby Number 2! But with that exciting news came a bit of sad news as well. The Duchess is once again suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG), which is a severe form of morning sickness that causes a great deal of physical stress to the body.

HG can affect 0.5%-2% of pregnant women and can be treated with a combination of IV fluids, medication, and nutritional support. Because Kate’s pregnancy is so highly publicized in media all over the world, there has been an increased awareness of the disease. The HER Foundation, a charity centered around educating women and doctors about HG, has outwardly demonstrated their support for the Duchess, the rest of the family, and the newest royal addition.

The HER Foundation was founded in 2002 by Kimber MacGibbon and Ann Marie King, two women who suffered from HG and wanted to create a forum for other women with HG. The HER website features a 5,000-member forum, information about how to get help for HG, and a blog. They are also working on beginning to fund research at the University of Southern California.

The HER Foundation wants to make sure that every woman suffering from HG gets the support she needs during and after her pregnancy. They are committed to advocating for HG in the media and in politics. Their ultimate goal is to be the “voice of support and hope to all who are faced with managing HG.”

The HER Foundation is a great resource for women and families suffering from HG and a great way to learn more about the condition. Our thoughts will continue to be with the Duchess as she prepares for Royal Baby #2!
