Sign Painting

A few weeks ago, I went to the Sign Painters movie screening at University of Canberra, which was organised by friend of mine from Good Design Club (Canberra designers & design students, check that site out!).

I found the documentary to be very interesting. Growing up in Asian countries, I was not very familiar about sign painting. I didn’t even know that there were people whose jobs are to paint signs. There were not many painted signs in where I came from. Or even if there was, they were not very artistic. Turns out that back in the 1980s, almost every establishments in the U.S were painted with beautiful hand lettering. Sadly, ever since the start of digital era, where printing can be done fast and affordable using digital printing machines, a lot of sign painters are not getting enough jobs. As a blogger I honestly feel bad about it. On one side I am happy that I live in this generation when everything is easier and faster (my parents were in a long distance relationship when they were young, and they had to communicate using mail which back then took weeks to arrive. How could they survive?!), and that I am embracing the new technology and digital age. However, I also realised how technology has drowned some of the things we used to love, such as books. I still prefer reading reading printed books and magazines than from an iPad.

Anyway, Sign Painters movie seem to be screening here and there around the world. Go and catch the movie if it ever screen in your city, it’s awesome. It’s amazing to watch the painters at work, and how steady their hands are.

Here are some signs that I sourced out from the internet and love:
