Road Trip : Long Weekend Getaway in Wollongong

During the Labour Day weekend, my family and I went for a weekend getaway in Wollongong. We have never been to Wollongong, and we just wanted to find out what it’s like, since it’s only 2 hours and 40 minutes from Canberra. Also, I kinda miss being at the beach. The beach is very beautiful, I especially like the lighthouse side of the beach. We were lucky to have the sun out during both days we were there.

Must Visit: Nan Tien Temple.
One of the most popular things to visit in Wollongong is Nan Tien temple, which is located not too far from the city centre. The temple is supposed to be very peaceful and serene. Although I can totally imagine that, on that day the temple was really packed and the weather was scorching hot. Nevertheless, it was still beautiful. You can try your hands on Chinese calligraphy writing, which is a very peaceful process.

One thing I regret of not doing was to eat in their canteen. The food was supposed to be delicious.

Stay at Chifley Wollongong
We stayed at Chifley Wollongong, a hotel located in the city centre and very close to the beach. The hotel is very modern and spacious, I totally recommend it to anyone who’s visiting Wollongong.

Coffee, Bar & Street Art
I find that Wollongong has a lot of young people for such a small city (could it be because there’s the University of Wollongong there?). Therefore the city has quite a number of cute cafes and hipster bars. We went to Lee and Me for coffee and breakfast (French toast is totally recommended), and Three Chimneys for dinner, drinks and footy (nope, not me. Just my husband. I was just there for the drinks!). Overall, in Wollongong it’s not hard to find places to eat in any budget.

I also find a few good quality street art around the city. Some of them are of commissioned artists from outside of Wollongong.

So will I visit Wollongong again? Yes I would! It will be a nice and fun getaway town for young people and beach bunnies. Also, I prefer beaches that are not very quiet and secluded. So the South Beach in W0llongong is definitely my kind of beach!
