5 Rainy Day Date Ideas
I know there are plenty of you still enjoying record temperatures and a ton of sun, but we’re hitting some cold spots in the morning, reminding me that a real change of weather is on the way. I’m not wishing away any sunshine we might get, but I’m just preparing myself for a time when my raincoat will be my best friend on my walk into work and I’ll be excitedly sipping a pumpkin spice latte from the warmth of a coffee shop as the cold really takes hold. I’m starting to think about the things my boy and I might like to do on weekends when rain is making a nuisance of itself and is stopping us from enjoying beach-side walks and high street shopping trips. Here are a few things that are going to be top of my list come a rainy Saturday or Sunday morning.
1. Game Night
My boy and I enjoy game nights – whether that be of the board variety, or when I’m whooping his ass at Scene It on the XBox, it’s fun to get competitive every once in a while and we really enjoy spending time together this way. We’ve built up a little collection of games we like to play together and our most recent favourite is The Walking Dead version of Monopoly, as it’s a different way of enjoying a TV show we love to watch together. Pick a game or two each and have a little fun, but don’t get too competitive or the atmosphere will turn a little sour – just take it as some light entertainment and you’ll be fine!
2. Coffee Shop
One of my absolute favourite things to do when the weather is bad is to hide away in a coffee shop for a couple of hours, talking, sipping warm drinks and enjoying the company of someone I love. It can also be nice to take a book or magazine along with you to enjoy side-by-side as the hours pass, just maybe go with a shop that you know will be on the quieter side rather than the ones filled with yelling kids and stressed out parents.
3. Food Night
Rather than having to go out in the bad weather, I enjoy spending time cooking with my boy when we’re feeling peckish on the weekend and feel like something a little special. If you want to go all out, you can light candles, dress up and really make an effort, but for me, it’s just working together to create something tasty that creates a special evening. I usually take charge in these kinds of situations, as I know my way around the kitchen better than the boy, but I like him to pick out the main dishes, so he always gets something he enjoys.
4. Bowling
When was the last time you went bowling? Try to ignore the thought of all the feet that have been in those shoes before you and just let loose a little. Bowling was one of my favourite things to do as a kid, and I sometimes miss spending days and evenings doing fun, meaningless things like this. I know I’m not very good at it, so all competitiveness would fly out of the window if I went for a game against my boy, but I know it would be great fun, and we’d probably add a few beers in there to make it a little more difficult and a whole lot more interesting!
5. Museum or Gallery
Take the time to get a little cultured at your local museum or art gallery. I haven’t been to a museum in years, but they absolutely fascinate me and I really do want to pay a visit to one soon. Most of them cost next to nothing, if anything at all, to visit, so it’s a super easy, out of the weather, way to spend a weekend afternoon. As me and boy go to London every now and again, I think I will be persuading him to go along to one of its world-famous museums on our next visit. I don’t think he’ll take much persuading, he’s really interested in history anyway, and I look forward to experiencing something new together.
