8 Reasons NOT to buy a house

Michael and I were literally signing papers for our house the day before our wedding, on the wedding day, and even while we were on our cruise for our honeymoon. I definitely don't recommend it, but it was exciting to come home and know that we had bought our own home. There is just something about owning your own home that makes you feel like a grown up and makes being married even more real. I still love the house that Michael and I picked out but I decided to give you some warning after a good year and a half in our first home. Just little things no one tells you as you are happily signing your life away and cheers-ing to 30 years of the fun of home ownership.
The Prairie 1. FIRST AND FOR MOST- you are in charge of what it looks like on the outside...aka lawn, flowerbeds, and plants. If you are like me and don't know the first thing about watering, covering things up when there are freezes (oops) and pulling weeds, save up and hire someone to come and help before it gets out of hand. Not that I'm speaking from experience or anything.
This is my backyard that I feel extra lucky to have 2. Every tiny little thing that goes wrong is you responsibility. We're talking drains, plumbing, lights, etc. There is no such thing as a landlord because when you signed those little papers you became that person. Get ready to do lots of googling and worrying.

3. Each and every crack you see in the wall is automatically a "huge issue" and you started preparing to give up your first born child. You may be laughing over there right now but once you see one little crack, it's like giving a mouse a cookie. They start showing up in your sleep, on the floors, in your food. Foundation is scary, no good word in our house right now and can you blame us? Shay had the worst issue with her foundation and ever since reading her horror story, we both worry to no end because it is something we can't really prevent.

4. Those walls you don't like the color of, you better learn to like them or be willing to dish out the cash for someone to come and handle it for you. Do NOT...I repeat...DO NOT try to paint it yourself with a roller brush, especially if your walls are old and textured like our lovely walls are. Hello 3 coats of paint that still didn't cover parts of the wall.
5. Nothing is ever just right. This needs to be updated, you don't like a certain color, the popcorn ceiling is driving you insane (speaking from lots of experience....why was that ever a thing), and the closet space just keeps getting smaller.

6. So you want those extra guest bedrooms, plus an office, and a play room? Wake up call Ashley, you have to clean them all. And it takes all day. And isn't very fun. At all.

7. Oh you like to be warm when it's cold outside? Pull out as many blankets as possible and take lots of hot baths because heating that 5 bedroom house you had to have will cost you more than you would ever think is legal. Next up on our list of house updates...better insulation.

8. When you buy a house instead of building one, you are stuck with little gems like this left for you to change out. It took almost a month but thankfully this little guy is out of my new office. One ugly light fixture down, 6 more to go.

To be honest, I 'm pretty much just kidding about most of these things. No, not all of them but most. It's a great feeling to know that you own a home with your husband, can do whatever you want to it, and that you are pretty much the boss of it. There are things that we want to change but it has been fun making this pretty little place into our very own over the past year and a half. Here's to 28 more years of us making this house our home. I wouldn't want to share this home ownership fun with anyone else. Happy Tuesday Friends.
