First trimester essentials

The first trimester can be a tough three months. You can feel sick, exhausted and emotional and quite often you have to pretend you feel fine as you haven’t told most people that you are pregnant yet! This pregnancy has followed my previous three and I’ve felt pretty good. I’ve know each time from about four weeks, so have always had a secret to keep for quite a few weeks!

Thankfully, I seem to be lucky in that I don’t suffer too much from morning sickness. I felt really queasy for a few weeks but that was as bad as it got. I found that the times that I felt the worse were first thing in the morning, and if I hadn’t eaten for a while. Having some ginger biscuits by the bed {these Nairns ones were my favourite!} for when I first woke up really helped, and making sure I had a snack between meals. I kept a bowl of pineapple ready to pick at in the fridge all the time! As well as snacking, I found that I was so thirsty – I made sure I kept a bottle of water with me any time we went out, and drank lots at home too.

I find that I usually seem to end up anaemic when I’m pregnant. I take a sachet of Spatone everyday anyway, when I’m pregnant I put it up to two sachets each day. Anaemia can leave you feel tired, breathless and lacking in energy. I remember almost passing out once in the bank when I was pregnant with Lola! Spatone is a great way to get your iron each day – it’s easier to absorb and more gentle on your tummy than iron tablets. I’ve used it in all four pregnancies and my iron levels have always stayed where they should.

Likewise, as soon as I found out I was pregnant I switched my usual vitamins to these Pregnacare prenatal vitamins. The perfect balance of all the vitamins and minerals you need in pregnancy as well as the vital folic acid.

This Little Me Mum to Be Rich Tummy Cream is my favourite tummy cream for pregnancy. I massage it in morning and night, it smells lovely and is great for helping prevent those stretch marks!

Lastly, this time around I’m excited to have a pregnancy journal to fill in. I’ve never actually kept one before, so this will fun to be able to look back on. I got this ‘Bump to Birthday Journal’ – space to record all of your pregnancy and the first year of your child’s life.

These were my essentials for the first twelve weeks – what were yours?
