Museum of Anthropology

Continuing on with our rainy walk, we splashed our way to the impressive Museum of Anthropology on the UBC campus. If I lived in the city, I would definitely make this museum a regular visit. The initial hallway gallery enters into the light filled Great Hall which contains breathtaking examples of Northwest Coast totems, carvings and artifacts. We all found something to marvel at. Luke and I talked about the differences between the nomadic indiginous tribes of the prairies and the sedentary villages of the costal nations. Eve enjoyed trying to interpret the carvings and paintings of animals. And the wooden buns. They both enjoyed the giant wooden buns...

The museum continued, amazing us with it's extensive collection of cultural artifacts from all over the world in the Multiversity Galleries (Ways of Knowing). I love the term, "Ways of Knowing" which sheds light on the value of unique perspective and experience. Artistically, the collection is something you could admire for hours. The craftsmanship and fine detail is quite inspiring. If you're in the area, it's a museum you have to see for yourself!

The last stop of our day was outside in the rain within the Nitobe Japanese Memorial Garden. It was magical - and the focus of our next travel post.
