9 Questions About Blogging

Every so often I get an email with a few questions related to blogging and my experience with it. Katy, a journalism student from Azusa Pacific University in Azuza, CA posed these thoughtful questions. I thought these 9 questions might be interesting for newer Lune readers to get a better idea of where the Lune Blog came from, and where I'm coming from as a blogger.

1. How long have you been blogging?

Since November 2007.

2. What made you want to begin writing a blog?

I started it to promote my vintage business. A friend of mine told me about blogs and how I could use them to showcase my merchandise and talk about vintage fashion in a more organic way than a static website.

3. Do you have a history in writing, other than blogging?

I’ve enjoyed writing and journaling all my life, but other than that, blogging was my first self published work.

4. What is your motivation for writing a blog?

Initially it was to attract new customers to my local and online vintage sales. Over the years it has become a place to record my favourite moments in life as mother, hobby photographer and travel lover. It has also given me opportunities to be a teacher and mentor, which I find very fulfilling.

5. What do you hope people get by reading your blog?

I aim to motivate people to find ways to connect themselves and their families with nature through travel, camping, old fashioned family time, and creative hobbies like photography. I also enjoy sharing my tips and thoughts about the process of blogging itself.

6. What is the most difficult part about blogging?

Finding your “groove” is difficult. It’s in the way you write, what topics you cover, your perspective, your attitude, and how you can best truly enjoy the process of blogging long term. If you can get there, maintaining a blog for a long time isn’t very hard.

7. What is the most enjoyable part about blogging?

Reading back on old entries! I really enjoy the oldest entries, but ones from the past two years are my favourites. 5 years seems like a long time to take to hit my blogging stride, but it was at this point where I feel I was really telling the story I wanted to read.

8. Do you read other blogs? Do you get inspiration from other blogs?

I don’t read a lot of blogs but I currently have a few favourites. Some are similar in ways to mine, and others are drastically different. I’m mostly inspired by how personable a blogger can be through their writing style. I constantly aspire to be as likeable as these bloggers, because when I read their posts I laugh out loud and feel like I really know them. That’s a special talent that can’t be forced, I think.

9. How do you define a "lifestyle blog?" What does that title mean to you?

A focused lifestyle blog puts the spotlight on a certain way of living, or way of looking at day to day life. I put value on connecting with nature, traveling as much as possible with my children, and appreciating the beautiful world around us. That’s the lifestyle I aspire to maintain, and what I’m assuming my readers also find valuable in their own lives.

From time to time I enjoy writing about the process of blogging. If you're thinking of starting your own blog or just need a little motivation to get your thoughts together as a blogger, here are a few articles you might enjoy.
