sightseeing new york

When I was growing up, I always wanted to visit the Statue of Liberty. Last Monday, that happened!

My sister and I went to New York and met up with my dear friend Katie and her boyfriend, Luke, and we spent not nearly long enough enjoying the city. Our time was over before we knew it, and now we're all back home. Honestly, I love living near Chicago, and can't imagine leaving for good, but spending time with good friends in such a special city was, well, pretty special.

We stayed in an apartment in Brooklyn, which had this great skylight in the hallway, and kittens in the backyard. The subway was just around the corner, and it felt like we got to see a bit of life that you wouldn't see if you were in a hotel.

On our first day there, before Katie arrived, Anna and I headed over to the Brooklyn Museum. It was really, really fantastic. They have a great collection, with lots of variety. And the building is pretty impressive too. Oh, and we saw a very crafty art piece that I'll be sharing here soon!

There was lots of walking between these buildings, and plenty of skyline viewing as well. I loved how you could walk around a corner and suddenly get a stunning view. It was kind of like a little gift!

As I said, when I was a child, the Statue of Liberty was so exciting to me, and the more I learn about it, the more special it becomes. But, I wasn't prepared for how emotional I would be about seeing her as we pulled into Ellis Island. Seeing sights that my great grandparents saw when arriving in the United States, and walking through spaces that they walked through over 100 years ago is pretty amazing.

Oh, and then there was the food. There was lots of food! My sister picked out the Little Cupcake Bakeshop as someplace that we NEEDED to visit, and she was right. I had a mini pie, and we shared this incredible cupcake!

On our last day, Anna and I made our way to the Brooklyn Bridge, and walked part way across. And it was beautiful.

But lest you think that this trip was all tourist sightseeing, stay tuned for the craftiness I encountered on my trip!
