TAME THE MANE

I have been blessed with naturally curly hair (read: cursed with often unruly hair). I admit that I actually do love my curls, but there are many times I’ve wished for the greener grass on the other side of the fence- hair that seems to behave no matter the weather conditions. I have girl friends with naturally straight hair that say they wish for the opposite of their hair and that their hair goes flat and gets gross but, as spectator, they look like a bunch of liars. Go ahead with your ‘it air dries like this hair’, I’ll be over here gathering my ammo of ponytail holders and bobby pins.

When the weather cooperates and is less humid or I’m feeling brave enough to put more effort into my hair the tools above are tried-and-true; I’ve been using them for years. One great thing I get out of my natural curls is volume – the bigger the hair the closer to God! I don’t go that big though, no teasing for me. Before I can use my basic (and trusty) clamp curling iron or flat iron I use what I feel is the most amazing hair dryer I have ever owned -believe me, I’ve been through my fair share! Some of my hair dryers have even caught fire before dying! Anyways, I’ve had the Super Solano for a handful of years now and it has continued to dry my hair faster and easier than any of my past dryers. It’s also quieter! In my drying process I use GHD heat protectant spray, a round brush and a paddle brush. I’m really not one to ever flat iron my whole ‘do since I do love some volume. I’m more of a blowout and curling iron kind of girl. (I do own a full-size flat iron, but never use it. I don’t love it so if you have suggestions for a good one I’m open to them.) That being said, I do use a mini flat iron everyday on my face framing hair. Because of a little widows peak, cowlicks, and curls the hair around my face gets a little extra treatment with the straightener. After all of my drying, curling, straightening I like to give my hair a little extra smoothing insurance and finish my ‘do with a bit of Fekkai Brilliant Glossing Creme.

I’m always looking for new curling irons, but keep going back to my basics because they just get the job done. What are your favorites that I should try?
