Sometimes it is easy to forget that Thanksgiving isn’t all about the food. You would think just saying the name would be a reminder that it is supposed to be about giving thanks. I had a little reminder of that the other night. Since April 2012 life has been a roller coaster and revolved around my husbands heart attack. For about a year and a half afterwards, I thought life would never be the same again. There was one problem after another with his health, and finally heart surgery to repair his mitro-valve last March. We had so many bad nights and so much stress and anxiety. I couldn’t imagine a time that my heart wouldn’t stop when the phone rang, especially if it was a local number I didn’t recognize. Was it someone calling to tell me my husband was in the hospital again? There were so many sleepless nights with him feeling symptoms. So many other things can mimic a heart attack.
Slowly but surely we started to go night after night without any problems. He picked up his exercise, and I could see how much healthier and stronger he was feeling. I could see his sense of humor returning, and slowly life did return back to normal. Before I knew it, I wasn’t jumping every time the phone rang. I wasn’t panicking to check my text messages after being at the gym. It is always somewhere in the back of my mind, but his heart condition was no longer running our lives. I started to diet and exercise again, and think about my own health. Before I knew it, I was taking his health for granted again.
Then last week, he had a bad night. He ate more than he should have and had heart burn. Unfortunately, heart burn mimics a heart attack. This time though, I didn’t panic or think the worst. I was fairly confident if we both relaxed and went back to sleep, everything would be OK in the morning. We talked for a little bit and I stroked his head. He started to relax, and we actually fell back asleep. What a huge accomplishment and sense of relief. Last year we both would have tossed and turned looking constantly at the clock for morning. This time we were in control. The symptoms are just different enough for him, that we could tell the difference between heart burn and a heart attack. That took a long time and medical intervention to decide.
I woke up feeling very thankful for my husband’s health and that our little family has more time together. It also spurred me to clean up my diet a little bit more and push a little harder at the gym. I need to get healthy, so I don’t end up with a heart condition too. So with Thanksgiving coming, I am remembering to be thankful. I am thankful for all of you that read Food Done Light. I’m thankful for my family and friends, and thankful that I can share our experiences with you all. What are you most thankful for?
