Big Bad Wolves (2013) (English)

A supposed pedophile serial killer gets kidnapped by a vindictive father and a policeman. The father who has just lost his daughter, wants to know where the alleged pedophile serial killer has hidden her severed head. To get this information he will do anything, and in this case it means torture.

Big Bad Wolves is a film I’ve heard mostly positive things about. Even with a serious theme and a rather gruesome opening when we see the dead daughter, Big Bad Wolves mostly offers dark humor.

The question then is, how fun it is to play with the theme of a pedophile serial killer? To be honest, I think this is not something to joke about, there is also a limit for me, and I love dark humor. But with the theme pedophilia, I feel that is something you don’t joke about.

If Big Bad Wolves was a pitch dark film, the film had worked much better in my opinion. We do not know if the man who has been kidnapped is the responsible, and had Big Bad Wolves been very dark and serious, one might at least have felt and thought a bit about if this was acceptable or not. For it’s not easy to know if he is the pedophile serial killer or not.

But since the film has the dark humor, the problem then is that I didn’t care about any of the characters. Even the killing and torture of innocent children didn’t get me angry, you can thank the cheerful tone for that.

Big Bad Wolves can be called an Israeli version of the South Korean film, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. But Big Bad Wolves doesn’t quite have the quality of that film, because Sympathy for Lady Vengeance has dark humor that fits in nicely, and at the same time it holds back so it doesn’t ruin the theme of the film.
