Crows Explode (2014) (English)

Another school year, another new king.

Crows Explode is the third film in Crows series. But this time Takashi Miike is not behind the camera, it is actually Toshiaki Toyoda, an accomplished director who has made films such as Hanging Garden, 9 Souls and Blue Spring. Many people think that Blue Spring is one of the best and toughest school films that are made, personally I was a little disappointed with the movie, but I will probably watch it again.

I love the first film, the sequel disappointed me a little because I feelt it didn’t had anything new to offer and the film had pacing problems. It’s a good film, but compared to the first film it was a little bit tame.

Crows Explode doesn’t offer anything new that we haven’t seen in the first two films. You really can tell that there is no Takashi Miike behind the camera. The characters are boring, I did not find some cool characters here at all, it is almost unbelievable. They are so lifeless and uninteresting.

The fight scenes are boring to watch. The choreography isn’t good at all. There is not a single fight that is impressive or exciting. The characters feels very similar. They try to look cool, but to no avail. We never get to know the characters at all, they don’t have a unique personality.

And I’m not a fan of the former gangster who has had a role in all three films to this date. In this film he is a car salesman, and beyond that it does not happen a lot with this character at all and it also reflects the other characters in the film. There is zero development, the only interesting character is the person who was lit on fire by his rival in a fight.

Crows Explode was a film I really looked forward to watch, but this was one of the biggest Asian disappointments of 2014. Crows Explode is quite similar to the predecessors, so why watch it when you can see the amazing original that is still kicking ass.
