Rubric by Kayla Mattes at Backtalk

Last night, vintage boutique Backtalk hosted the opening of Rubric, an art show featuring the work of Kayla Mattes. Mattes exhibited bright, geometric tapestries with a neo pop-art aesthetic. She experimented with texture, shape, and textiles to create abstract pieces, many of which incorporated cultural iconography, such as smiley faces, pizza slices, and even the Apple logo, which often made for chaotic compositions.

Some of the most striking pieces used fuzzy, voluminous materials that added dimension and made elements of the image melt together.

In addition to her tapestries, the show featured Mattes' line of necklaces called Summer Camp, which has the same colorful, kitschy aesthetic and playful vibe.

If you missed the show last night, it's not too late to view the art and shop the Summer Camp selection. Swing by the Backtalk's North Mississippi location to check it all out, along with the store's usual mix of super-cute vintage clothes.
