DWP: Making a Terrarium at Christopher David

When crossing the Broadway Bridge from East to West, it drops you off onto NW Lovejoy. Keep going, and on 10th there's a pleasant little boardwalk that sprawls in place of cement. The businesses along here are Lovejoy Bakers (they kindly supply many chairs to sit and relax in), Perch Furniture, and Christopher David. It's a peaceful corner of NW that isn't too busy, and there's a colonnade of trees just on the block south (well technically it's the same block) at Jameson Square that is so very Fall right now. The leaves are wisping off and dancing down onto the sidewalk. All this is good inspiration just before heading into Christopher David to build a terrarium! CDexD (Christopher David Experience Design) offered three days worth of classes for Design Week Portland, and they all sold out quickly. With the ticket they supplied all the materials including, three succulents (of which there were almost too many to choose from) a glass terrarium bowl, rocks, sand and dirt. They were also offering wine, tea, coffee and some light snacking during the event.

901 NW 10th is a huge space that houses a polished collection of home decor curated by interior designer, Chris Giovarelli, (the shop's namesake) a cafe' that's run and manned by Kevin Nichols and a flower shop. Cosmin Biscorca, the flower curator (and owner of a super bad-ass name!) was also our gracious instructor (he said something along the lines that we were an exceptionally precise and creative bunch!). In less than an hour we were shown how to layer the elements, gently plant the precious succulents, how to care for them and not kill them. It was curious to see what each individual chose, as there were varying options of sand and rock too. This is a class that is offered monthly, as well as flower arranging and private workshops. While there, all three men were present and it sounds like they almost always are, which is a nice way to run a business..or three-in-one! The list of future classes isn't up yet, but I'd suggest checking back. I will be forcing all my friends to make terrariums with me now.
