My Geeky Dark Side

Something you may not know about me if you have started following my blog since my revamp several weeks ago, I have a dark side to my geekiness, and since it’s October and Halloween is quickly approaching I thought I would share a little bit about this side of me with all of you.

No, I’m not talking about my love of zombies and horror movies. I am a huge fan of the macabre, and unusual. I find beauty in things where a lot of people don’t like in things like anthropomorphic taxidermy, memento mori, etc. For example, here are photos of my naturally mummified frog H.T.

So, long story short, I can relate a lot to Lydia from Beetlejuice.

So, I was extremely intrigued by an article I found today at Gizmodo about a lake in Tanzania that has a chemical makeup so lethal, it turns any animal that touches it into stone. The Medusa of the bodies of water of the world so to speak.

But here is what I found most interesting, photographer Nick Brandt has taken many of the petrified animals that line the shore of this lake, posed them in what would be their somewhat natural “living” positions to photograph them and the results are absolutely stunning.

See? Beauty can be found in almost anything, including death.

If you are interested in seeing more of Nick’s amazing photos, you can see them in his new book Across the Ravaged Land

.

Do you have a geeky dark side too? What kind of strange things do you like to collect?
