On The Plus Side: Under Construction

Even if you don’t live in New York, I’m sure you’ve heard of my neighborhood. Bushwick rocketed to the tips of everyone’s tongues after we became tired of talking about Williamsburg, hipsters, and the price of rent (it’s too damn high!). The result of all of that buzz is a boom in demolition and construction. I may not have a drugstore within walking distance, but there are four new apartment complexes visible from my window. Abandoned lots are being converted into chic condos, and churches that once held ceremonies and later corporate-sponsored bike rallies are under renovation. It’s kind of weird to see this level of change in a neighborhood that I’ve lived in for over six years, but it will be nice to see everything after the dust settles.

There’s something hauntingly beautiful about this abandoned lot. Maybe it was the way the afternoon sun poured across the buildings and lit the trees, or maybe it’s the promise of something new, but I keep coming back. Someday soon it will be someone’s home or their place of business and it will mean something else entirely. But for now, it feels like my own secret.
