DIY Coffee Scrub

Remember when Instagram was buzzing with photos of nearly naked women with coffee slathered all over their bodies? The trail led to a new beauty product called Frank Body, which claims to get rid of dry skin and reduce cellulite and I was impressed, although not totally convinced because it was time for a DIY and yes, making a coffee scrub is as easy as it sounds.

Things you will need:

  • ½ cup of sugar
  • ½ cup of sea salt
  • 1 cup of (leftover) coffee granules
  • Olive oil, coconut oil or essential oils. (Use enough so that the mixture holds, but isn’t runny)

Mix it all together and apply! Be careful because it does get e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e so you might want to save it for the shower.

Also, spoiler alert, I’m about to level the playing field between buying and DIYing.

  1. “It makes my skin so soft” - Take away the coffee and what do you have? Oil. Of course it makes your skin soft, it’s simply an unconventional conditioning tool.
  2. “It gets rid of my dry skin” – What’s the difference between Aveeno scrub and coffee scrub? Nothing. Both have exfoliating ingredients that buff the skin and help rid you of flakes.
  3. “My cellulite is gone” – It might be hidden for the moment, but once you stop using the product, it comes back. Why? Caffeine draws water cells, making them smaller and constricts blood vessels to give your skin a temporarily tighter and smoother appearance. #Science.

So whereas I experiences the smoothness and temporary relief of some dry skin patches, this product is more of a vacation than real life, if you know what I mean, and I’ll be sticking to making it myself in the future.
