ODE TO THE PERSON SLEEPING NEXT TO YOU

I remember how through the years, every time I was telling my mother about my friends and I was asking her why she only has girlfriends not “soul mate” girlfriends anymore her answer was always the same: “You’ll get older and you’ll realize that there is no one as close to your soul than the person you’re sharing the bed/life with”

At that time I always considered it to be an aberration, I mean how could not your girlfriends be the closest to your soul? A boy? A man? How could he ever understand me? They are a different “species”! Nope, totally out of the question. Men could not possibly understand the complexity of my mind, of our minds.

Those were my thoughts at 15, 18 and ever at my age of 25. And then one day I met him. I met the man along side whom I understood what my mother was referring to – the best co-mate, the best friend, the person who is always there unconditionally and the person who always saves you is the person with which you share your bed at night. That there’s no one closer to you than the man you’re sharing your dreams, fears, moments of happiness or sadness with. And who takes your little hand into his and makes you feel that you’re not fighting your battles alone.

Dear mother, it took me 28 years but I’ve finally understood. I understood how feelings, relationships and love should be divided in our souls and I also understood that no matter the “species” soulmates are soulmates!
