OPI Fifty Shades of Grey Collection

If you have been living under a rock you may have missed the hype around the three book S&M Fest series that is Fifty Shades of Grey. Well, if you missed the book buzz then you can be pretty sure you won’t be able to miss the hype around the film – that hits cinemas on Valentines day (not sure I can think of a more awkward film to watch on a date in a room with loads of others…). But along with the film come a whole host of products including this OPI Fifty Shades of Grey Collection. The most obvious thing for me to say here is that it clearly isn’t fifty shades, but three, plus a couple of others ‘inspired’ by the book/film. But even as a big fan of grey nails… fifty shades would be a bit much.

Taking it from L-R we have: Romantically Involved - a deep creamy red that I’m a little disappointed isn’t called ‘Red Room of Pain’. Shine for Me – A blue and silver fine glitter mix with clear base, probably my favourite as the most unusual but perhaps the one I don’t necessarily ‘get’ as linked to the film. My Silk Tie – A silver shimmer, very nice but not totally unusual. Then on to the grey shades… we have Cement The Deal – A pale grey cream, liking the business reference with the name. Embrace the Gray – A mid toned creamy grey, this confuses me between the spelling of grey and gray but think it’s a play on the expression ‘Embrace the Day’. Then finally we have Dark Side of the Mood – the deep grey, almost black looking cream shade. Another play on words that OPI are known for in their names so this would be dark side of the moon…

Overall, as a collection I do like it. I do have a thing for grey (gray?) nail varnish so I knew the collection would appeal to me. Of all of them the one I would skip would be My Silk Tie and the stand out has to be either Cement The Deal (palest gray) or Shine For Me (the glitter).

Name wise, I would have perhaps liked to see a little more of a link to the film…but then I guess calling nail shades things like ‘red room of pain’ or ‘inner Goddess’ doesn’t necessarily have quite the same ‘universal’ appeal as the names these shades do have! The best thing about this though is that they can actually be bought as a full collection of mini sized (who ever finishes a full bottle of nail colour anyway) including all six shades for £19.95. Or of course you can pick out your favourite single shade for £11.95 – whatever floats your boat!

In terms of quality – they’re all good at two coats, other than Dark Side of the Mood that was a little harder to work with and would need three. On the nails, I’ve tried Embrace the Gray and it was good but did chip a little after about 3 days.

Tell me, are you planning to see the Fifty Shades of Grey movie at the cinema when it comes out… or perhaps wait until it’s on DVD (or skip all together?!)
