The Typewriter (Ch. 3.1)

In just a minute, the room was filing out to a hidden door in the wall beside Rald and I. They were loudly cheering and screaming while they shoved Cash into the next room. When it was empty, I got up from Rald’s lap. As I ascended, he gently grabbed onto my hand. “Shall we?” “I thought it was going to be here?” “So did I but I had forgotten what great talents Cash had.” Before I opened my mouth, Thyst approached behind me, resting his hand on my shoulder. When I turned to see him, his gaze wasn’t on me but on Rald. “You always underestimated.” “Now that’s not always true. This girl right here, I would never.” “What do you mean?” I asked. Underestimating me for what? He still didn’t answer my question. But Thyst was the one who spoke. “It’s nothing. He always does this.” “Don’t be too mean, Amethyst.” Rald chuckled. Amethyst? “I know more than you will ever know.”
“Let’s get out of here.” Thyst said. His eyes never leaving Rald’s as he twisted me towards the cracked ajar door. He wasn’t gentle. There was tension between the two of them. Rald shook his head but the smile was still on his lips. “Now this wasn’t how I wanted. I don’t want out little Anberlin-“ “Lin.” I spatted. “Lin.” He smiled back before looking back at Thyst who was glaring. “To see me as a bad guy.” “You are one.” Thyst scoffed. I didn’t even realized that his hand was still on my shoulder until I started to feel it sink in. “Um, Thyst!” But they only ignored me. “Only between you and yourself do you assume that.” Rald said. Thyst had enough of it as he pulled my arm towards the door. “C’mon.” “Don’t want to miss your friend show off his talents before he goes off into work.” “Work?” I stopped. “I’ll tell you everything later.” Thyst snarled, grabbing me by the hand and dragging me towards the door. I stopped him when I noticed that Rald wasn’t moving. “Fucking serious?” he mumbled. “Shut it.” I whispered at him. He did. Thyst let go of my hand and crossed his arms. He was ready to leave. But I didn’t care. I wanted one thing answers and two, “Aren’t you going to come with us?” I asked Rald. “Now, by the time you actually get a glimpse of him, it will all be over. Plus I already know what he is capable of. I’ll see him when I congratulate him.” “Will I be there?” “No.” Thyst said. “Elites only.” “Elites only here too but look where I am?” He stared at me. Long and hard without moving a muscle. Only the sound of the mumbled screaming and smashes of the other room was heard. Surprising that I didn’t hear it before. Thyst just sighed, pulled a toothpick from his pocket, and started to chew on it. “You look like you got him mad.” Rald chuckled. Thyst’s glare directed back to him. “Where are you going now?” “Back to work. Someone important needs me back up there.” Thyst grunted behind me but I pushed it off. I didn’t know what his deal was. All day he was mean to me and now he wants to be like this? I rather be with Rald than him. But he was heading out the door. “Wait!” I yelled. He stopped, staring at me confused. I didn’t have to say anything before he approached me and gave me a kiss on the cheek. “You’re a quick girl. I know it. You will know everything soon enough.” And he was gone. I faced Thyst who was staring darkly back at me. “You better tell me everything that I want to know!” I scolded. Yet he just pushed me off. “Yea, Yea. But to tell you the truth right now, I don’t know half the shit he was spitting to you so you better ask him the rest.” “Sure thing,” I said. “Amethyst.” Thyst turned back and glared. “You want to be called Lin; I want to be called Thyst.” “All C’mon what’s so bad about your name?” I taunted. I felt like I won with the look of his annoyed face but when his hands started to turn into fists and were quickly jammed into his pocket, I knew something else was up. In a strange way, I knew it wasn’t because of me. He pushed past the door and into the room. For a moment I felt guilty. Maybe there was a reason he was wanted to be called Thyst. I had a reason for mine. But yet I felt so good. And just like Rald said, we did miss the showing of Cash. By the time I followed Thyst far in the dark red lit room filled in a circle with the people at the party and pushed past them, Cash was already huffing and puffing with broken weapons scattered around him on the floor and opened wounds. I ran up to him, wondering if he was okay. I couldn’t hear him past the cheering but the look on his face told me that he was fine. And at that moment I wanted to know everything. Especially what just went on with Cash and this mess. From the way I saw him this early afternoon, he was a sweet caring a little funny guy, but now…he was laughing hard with drops of blood dripping from his head. When he saw my eyes, wide with fear and confusion, he took my hand and I felt the gentleness of him from before. He leaned down to my ear. “We all have secrets that are bigger and extraordinary than we really are.” I didn’t know what he meant by that. I assumed he was talking about his ‘talents’ but it wasn’t a secret to all the people around us. And then I thought… I turned back to look for Thyst, hoping that later was now but he was no where to be in sight. And the cloth was now back over my eyes. “It’s time to take you back now.” Cash whispered.
