Medieval History: Castle Life

Here are some of the lessonplans and work we have been doing on castles.

  • Discuss who lived in a castle and where they lived.

The lord and his family lived in the castle. The servants and staff also lived there. There were often accommodations for the clergy and knights in the castles. The animals also lived in the castle. During times of fighting, the peasants sought shelter in the castle, but they did not live their regularly. Since the castle tower was often the strongest structure, many of the castle's residents lived within its walls. The servants and soldier's quarters were on the first floor. The second level served as the secure sleeping quarters of the lord and his family. Since the basement held the wells and stored the food, the tower was the best place for survival in a siege.

  • Choose one person who lived in a castle and have the character describe a typical day.
  • At times life in a castle was exciting and at times dull. Describe the events at a Medieval feast.
  • Make a stained glass window of a knight, lord, lady or priest.

from Castles
  • Write about the structure and arrangement of a castle using the following terms correctly: battlements, crenels, portcullis, gatehouse, motte, palisade, bailey, moat and drawbridge.
  • Draw a map of a fiefdom, including a castle, farmlands and buildings that might be found around a castle.

from The Art and Industry of Sandcastles
